Choose the count that matches your task
Grapheme clusters approximate the characters people perceive as single units, including many joined emoji and combined accents. Unicode code points count encoded symbols. UTF-16 units are the count JavaScript uses for string length; UTF-8 bytes measure the encoded text size.
These counts include spaces and line breaks. Words use the browser’s English word segmentation, so punctuation-only segments do not count as words. A final line break terminates the last line rather than adding another empty line; empty input has zero lines.
An example you can verify
The fox emoji 🦊 is one grapheme cluster, one Unicode code point, two UTF-16 units and four UTF-8 bytes. A family emoji with joiners has more code points while often remaining one grapheme cluster. Copy the report to compare these definitions.
A game or platform may count text differently or reject symbols independently of length. This report does not guarantee acceptance. For malformed JavaScript text, UTF-8 encoding replaces an unpaired surrogate with the replacement character.
Local text processing
The input is processed in this browser and is not sent to our servers or included in tool-use analytics. Use up to 20,000 UTF-16 input units at a time. Copy output keeps your original input intact; if clipboard access is blocked, the output is selected for manual copying.
Questions
- Which number is the character count? It depends on the requirement. Grapheme clusters approximate perceived characters; UTF-16 units are JavaScript string length; byte limits require an encoding such as UTF-8.
- Does this upload my text? No. The counts are calculated locally in your browser.
